This building is known for being “the church of miracles”, as evidenced by the many ex-votos thanking the Virgin Mary for her protection. The name “Sanctuaire de l’Immaculée Conception” is a tribute to Mary, who always protects her children.

In 1859, the first indigenous school was established here. The stained glass windows recount the arrival of the gospel in New Caledonia (Balade).

The clock is still in working order, the bell tower is made from gum oak and the pillars that support it were originally made from kauri. It now stands on blocks made from coral. Every year, thousands of believers flock here for the Assumption (15 August) after a pilgrimage from their parish or home and gather to worship Mary.

It's the perfect starting point for a tour of the churches of the Great South.
