A day in Poum

Anaëlle and Steven's good ideas

Waking up in Poum promises an extraordinary day in the far north of New Caledonia. Between the semi-arid and wild splendour of the landscapes and the feeling of being at the end of the world, this 24-hour experience was full of discoveries. From Malabou Beach to exhilarating hikes, each moment amazes.

Waking up at Malabou Beach

Enjoy the hotel and its heavenly pool

Waking up at Malabou Beach means a gentle start to the day. You can sunbathe by the pool or walk along the beach and admire the scenery.

Comfortable and pleasant, our bungalow opened onto a seafront terrace: the perfect place for us to relax and enjoy the view and the surrounding tranquillity.

The hotel is ideally located if you wish to explore this picturesque region, where mineral landscapes and vast mangrove swamps mingle. Here, nature reigns supreme, and the sunset over Baie de Néhoué enchanted us: a colourful sight that enhanced our evening the night before.

Good to know: If you’re looking for more privacy, the hotel offers bungalows with private pools, an option we’ll keep in mind for a future visit. Also, with its flat, open terrain, private beach with a shallow swimming area, and several sports facilities such as mini-golf, the hotel is perfect for children to play while you keep an eye on them from a safe distance.

Hike to the Col d'Arama

After a short drive of less than 15 minutes from Malabou Beach Hotel, we parked in the car park at the starting point.  Then we set off on the 45-minute ascent of Col d’Arama and the prize on reaching the top was everything we’d hoped for: a breathtaking panorama spanning both sides of the island.

Our advice: don’t forget to put on sun cream and ensure you wear suitable footwear. You must also take something to rehydrate, as there are no water points on the route.

Lunch at Kejaon gîte

and a photo shoot on its iconic pontoon

After our morning hike, we headed to Kejaon gîte for lunch. Easily accessible from Boat Pass road and around 15km north of Poum, the gîte is ideal for enjoying lunch by the water.

The pretty beach features a charming pontoon, perfect for taking photos, and you’ll find several small comfortable loungers for basking in the sun. We truly enjoyed our meal: our Vietnamese hostess combined the flavours of her native country with those of New Caledonia.

Good to know: the gîte offers bungalows if you want to extend your experience. And for those of you who love adventure and the great outdoors, you can camp with friends or family and enjoy this exceptional natural setting.

Clay baths

and a visit to Case à Sel

The Poingam clay baths were a unique adventure for us. There are two ways to get there: a 2-hour hike or a shorter 15-minute walk from Case à Sel. We opted for the second, crossing a small forest and skirting the salt marshes and the beach.

The feel of the clay on your skin is surprisingly pleasant – Steven particularly enjoyed it. And after a mud bath, there’s nothing better than a swim in the sea to rinse off. You’ll find your skin is incredibly soft! Changing rooms are available, where you’ll find a handmade shower inside. The shower water, scented with niaouli, leaves the skin delicately fragranced. A true pleasure!

Access is free. However, a box is available for you to leave a donation of your choice.

This is a perfect activity for everyone, whether you’re with family or friends or are a couple. Remember to bring a towel, swimming costume, old trainers and a change of clothes.

Don’t forget to stop at La Case à Sel to discover the famous Kô salt marshes, an authentic memory of this unique Poingam experience.

Tarap Destination

a 4x4 ride with a sunset

Tarap Destination is not in the Poum area, but in Ouégoa. Nevertheless, as it was only an hour away, we decided we must tell you about our favourite part of the trip.

Tarap is an experience that links people with adventure, and one that has left us with memories we’ll never forget. Ricky, our guide, is one of those memorable people. His stories and generosity made our adventure unforgettable.

Several activities are available on site. We opted for the boat trip on the Diahot River and the buggy excursion on Ricky’s property.

We stopped off at the top on a small furnished deck to admire the panoramic view over Ouegoa and the far north of  Caillou. This is the perfect place to stop, take a breather, watch the sunset and enjoy the end of the day in style.

Would you like to stay overnight? Tarap Destination offers simple but comfortable bungalows. Each has a welcoming terrace where you can relax and enjoy the peaceful location. If you prefer, you can camp, and tents are available on site.

Dinner and overnight at Beach House Lodge

Our beautiful day ended at Beach House Lodge, a tranquil haven with a stunning view of Tie Island. We stayed in a charming lodge where everything, from the decor to the atmosphere, was designed for comfort and escape.

The flexibility for meals was ideal: we had the choice of preparing something in the villa kitchen or indulging in room service. We chose the second option, with a seafood-based menu, and we weren’t disappointed: the meal was delicious.

Beach House Lodge offers a multitude of activities: a petanque court, a games area equipped with a pool table, board games and table football, and canoeing, kayaking, and even sailing. There’s plenty to keep you busy during the day and in the evening, making a stay of several nights both relaxing and entertaining.

To crown it all, we were lucky enough to spot wild horseson the beach, a magical moment that will forever live in our memories.

Good to know

  • If you’re travelling from Noumea, be aware that the journey to Poum takes around 5 hours by car. This is why we recommend spending one or more nights in the area, so you can enjoy your stay without rushing. It will also give you the chance to explore the  Northern Islets, each a small unspoilt paradise perfect for relaxing and escaping from everyday life.
  • Fishing enthusiasts will be delighted to know that the region is also renowned for deep-sea fishing. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned angler, this is an experience not to be missed!
  • As well as offering a delicious culinary experience, Kejaon gîte is the perfect place to end your day on a high note, watching the sun dip behind the horizon in a warm colour-tinged ambience.
