Fort Teremba

Téremba was built in 1871, at the top of a plateau overlooking the sea. It was destined to become the prison and administrative centre for the vast territory of Uarai, which covers La Foa, Farino and Moindou. The growing need for land for the most deserving convicts was the trigger for the Kanak insurrection of 1878, led by Chief Atai. One of the consequences of this was the construction of the military fort you can still visit today. The Marguerite Association has been working to restore and maintain this historical New Caledonian site since 1984.

As you wander through the various buildings at Fort Téremba, you can easily imagine it operating as a prison. Inside the prison and the main building are permanent exhibitions retracing the history of the fort and life at that time. With specially designed information boards for children, this visit is a great family activity. Guided tours and escape games can be booked all year round. The fort’s calendar includes regular events like the famous “Fort Téremba Light and Sound Show”.
