The former residence of the commander of the La Foa penitentiary, this significant historical site for Caledonian society represents the era of the penal colony. This period, once considered taboo, is now acknowledged and shared by all local communities.

Built in 1895, the commander's house was established as New Caledonia ceased to receive shipments of convicts. After being auctioned off by the Penitentiary Administration, the house changed hands several times, including ownership by the Congregation of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart from 1958 to 2018.
