During the penal colony era, the building that currently houses the Bourail municipal library in the centre of the village served as the town hall.
The current municipal library of Bourail was, in the 1890s, a courtroom for justices of the peace as well as a meeting room for the municipal commission, before it became the village town hall. This building now houses the municipal library while the current town hall is located opposite.
