A monument in memory of the 1988 hostage-taking and the 19 pro-independence activists killed during the assault on the Gossanah cave.
Accessible from the beach as well as by road, the memorial is on your left going north, facing the Grand chief’s traditional hut. 19 carved poles pay tribute to the 19 independentist Kanaks who died during the assault on the Gossanah cave. The sculptures were made by Caledonian sculptors, but also by Fijian and Vanuatu artists in residence in Ouvéa. A commemorative ceremony takes place on 5 May every year in the presence of the families of the militants, but also those of the gendarmes who...
