On Ahmelewedr beach, stands a monument that commemorates the arrival in Lifou of the Protestant missionaries Fao and Zakaria in 1842.
Originally from the Cook Islands, the “teachers” Fao and Zakaria arrived in Lifou in July 1842. The London Missionary Society ship brought them to the beautiful Bay of Ahmelewedr where their canoe was lowered into the sea, and where they were welcomed by the Grand Chief of Lössi. It was on this same beach that the English pastor Samuel McFarlane landed in 1860, and with him, the first vanilla plants (from Madagascar), that he gave to the Api-Kai clan.
