On the quayside facing the sea at Tadine stands the monument to La Monique in memory of the 126 people who disappeared in 1953 on the ship La Monique somewhere between Maré and Nouméa.
The Monique, a former US Navy ship, had been ensuring voyages between Maré and Noumea since the end of the Second World War. During the night of 31 July to 1 August 1953, she disappeared between Maré and the main island. The 108 passengers and 18 crew members were never found. Even today the disappearance remains unexplained and constitutes a trauma in the memory of all Caledonians. Every year in Tadine, young and old celebrate the memory of those missing persons.
