Head to La Foa to see this superb suspension bridge over the water—a testament to the region’s history.

At the southern entrance to the village of La Foa, Marguerite Bridge (Passerelle Marguerite) is steeped in history. Based on the original bridge built by the convicts in 1893, this footbridge is made of wood and metal and surprisingly modern considering its age. It was designed by students of Eiffel and assembled in France, then dismantled and shipped in pieces to New Caledonia. This superb structure is now a centenarian! It was opened on 25 January 1909 and is named after the wife of Governor Richard. Marguerite Bridge still stands today, suspended over the river by its guy wires. It was listed as a historic monument in 1984 and restored in 1998. You can cross it on foot to admire its architecture and take a closer look at the river below.
