Plain of the Lakes

  • Plain
Elevation : 310m
Netcha, 98834 Yaté
A vast wetland lying within a plateau that forms two lakes—Lac en Huit and Grand Lac—separated by impressive expanses of marshland. The area is also home to neocallitropsis species that used to be used to bind perfume.
You’ll see widespread maquis vegetation bordered by an enormous mountainside ironwood forest, a small family of gum oaks, the famous mountain kaori and a wide diversity of other amazing native plants. But let's get back to the neocallitropsis... Say hello to the main native conifer of the Great South; in 1942 it became the first species of tree you weren’t allowed to cut down. Cutting it down is still prohibited today, even if the wood is already dead.
