On June 19, 1955, for the Feast of the Sacred Heart—also the Patronal Feast of the tribe—a large crowd gathered from all corners of New Caledonia for the blessing and inauguration of the monumental Lourdes Cave. It was built at the foot of the mountain that represents the Pyrenees, where the Gave River originates to nourish Lourdes. At the edge of this river lies the miraculous rock of Massabielle, where the Immaculate Virgin appeared to the shepherdess.
