Visit the Moselle port market

From Tuesday to Sunday, the marché municipal de Nouméa presents its colourful produce on its stalls. The “Moselle market” is the city’s most diverse, offering fresh produce from New Caledonia and the Pacific. Each blue-tiled pavilion specialises in fruit and vegetables, freshly caught fish, handicrafts, and more. Don’t forget to relax at the central buvette and observe the lively local scene!

Visit downtown Nouméa

The historic heart of Nouméa features iconic landmarks, fascinating museums, gourmet delights, and numerous boutiques. Start by heading to Place des Cocotiers, the city’s nerve centre and a hub of activity. Admire its bandstand, historic statues, and flamboyant trees that blush during the austral summer. Explore the Musée de la Ville or Maison Higginson, followed by leisurely strolls through clothings and home decoration boutiques.

Taste the flavours

Nouméa boasts talented chefs and diverse restaurants that reflect the city’s culinary variety. Whether facing the lagoon on Nouméa’s bays or in the bustling city centre, savour local, fresh produce expertly combined with creativity and modernity, blending European, Asian, and Oceanic influences.

Shopping

Nouméa offers trendy boutiques and quality craft shops. Concept stores abound in downtown Nouméa and on Anse-Vata and Citrons bays, offering authentic souvenirs. Head to artisanal boutiques like Les Arts du Pacifique on La Promenade complex in Anse-Vata or on Les Quais in downtown Nouméa for unique finds.

Relax on the beach

Nouméa’s easily accessible beaches offer shelter from the wind and opportunities for water sports. Baie des Citrons beach is supervised and protected from the wind, making it ideal for family swimming and picnicking. Water sports enthusiasts will enjoy Anse-Vata beach, known for sailing and kite-surfing. Rental companies offer equipment and introductory courses. This is also the departure point for shuttles to îlot Canard and îlot Maître if you prefer to spend your day trip on one of these islets.

Take a guided tour

Explore the city in an interesting way with various options such as the Petit train de Nouméa, tourist buses, private driver-guides, guided segway tours, and more. For those who’ve visited Nouméa before, consider an all-inclusive day at Phare Amédée, a 40-minute boat ride away, offering guided crossings, an Oceanian buffet, shows, beaches, water sports activities, and a lighthouse visit.

Discover the museums

Immerse yourself in Kanak culture and art at the Tjibaou Cultural Centre. Designed by renowned architect Renzo Piano, it’s nestled in a green setting on the lagoon’s edge. Explore modern huts serving as exhibition halls, visit the garden with exotic plant species of Kanak symbolism, delve into maritime history at the Musée Maritime, and explore the former penal colony penitentiary on Isle Nou.

Admire the sunset

End your day in Nouméa by enjoying a breathtaking sunset on the water. Whether at an overwater bar or with your feet in the sand, sipping a signature cocktail, it’s a truly enjoyable experience. Many bars and lounge-bars on Nouméa’s bays offer this experience, including MV Lounge, La Bodega, and the Méridien Hotel.
