Tadine Market
A Taste of Authentic Nengoné LifeA true gathering place for the locals, Tadine Market plunges you into the core of authentic Nengoné life from the very first light of day. Open on Tuesdays and Fridays, this bustling market offers a delightful array of local flavours, including fragrant vanilla, artisanal honey, and the must-try local pudding.
In May, the market comes alive with the Fête de l’Avocat, or Avocado Festival—a vibrant three-day celebration featuring tastings, cultural events, and a showcase of the island’s cherished avocado harvest.
We loved chatting with the friendly locals. The warm welcome from the producers, always eager to share their stories, makes a visit to Tadine Market a truly enriching experience and a genuine connection to the local culture.
Good to know: Tadine Market opens at dawn. To enjoy the freshest produce and the best selection of local delights, it’s best to arrive before 11 am.
Snorkelling
at Mebuet beachAlso known as Baie des Tortues (Turtle Bay), Mebuet Beach is a true haven of tranquillity. We were fortunate to swim alongside majestic sea turtles—a wondrous experience that never fails to inspire awe.
Good to know: This serene and inviting spot becomes even more enchanting at sunset, when the golden waters beautifully capture the magic of the moment.
The 5 Beaches Walk
From Shini to Hpédé via Cap WabaoThe Balade des 5 Plages can be completed in just one hour, but the breathtaking scenery makes it an experience to savour. As soon as we set foot on Shini Beach, we were captivated by its sense of exclusivity and untouched beauty.
Soft, pristine white sand stretches beneath your feet, while the crystalline waters invite you to take a refreshing snorkelling break. It’s the ideal setting to slow down and truly embrace the moment.
Following the trail, you’ll arrive at Cap Wabao, a legendary site. Its striking coral terraces, adorned with columnar pines, overlook secluded coves with shimmering waters. With a silhouette said to resemble the head of a sea serpent, Cap Wabao offers a truly spectacular vantage point.
The walk ends in breathtaking style at Baie de Hpédé, a string of small, picturesque beaches and coves with dazzling turquoise waters. It’s here, as the sun sets and casts a fiery glow over Cap Wabao, that the true magic unfolds—made even more enchanting by the majestic islands dotting the horizon.
Good to know: To reach the starting point, follow the road south from Tadine to the car park just before Cap Wabao. Alternatively, you can start from the Nengone Village Hotel. Be sure to bring water, a hat, and sturdy shoes suitable for walking on rocky terrain.
Lobster tasting
at Mejo'sFacing the dramatic cliffs overlooking the sea, Mejo and her husband have created a tranquil haven where local gastronomy takes centre stage. Their beautifully handcrafted faré, perched above the mesmerising turquoise lagoon, offers an unforgettable setting for a truly special dining experience.
The highlight of the menu? Freshly caught lobster, prepared with the utmost simplicity to allow its delicate flavours to shine through.
For us, this experience was more than just a meal—it was a moment of genuine connection, where the warm hospitality and inviting atmosphere transformed lunch into a cherished memory.

Wood Sculpting Workshop
With PierreWe had the privilege of meeting Pierre, a gifted artisan whose craft has been passed down through generations.
His workshop offers a fascinating insight into the art of wood carving, with a particular focus on sandalwood—a beautifully fragrant wood highly sought after by prestigious French perfume houses. Pierre guided us through each stage of the process, from the initial shaping to the final polishing, sharing his expertise and passion along the way.
How to get there: Head past the sandalwood factory on the island’s northern side and keep an eye out for a wooden sign on the left marked “Sculptor”.
